Meenakshi Temple bags “Best Swachh Iconic Place” award
The iconic Madurai Meenakshi temple bagged the “Best Swachh Iconic Place” award under the Swachh Bharat Mission of the Central government on 2nd October.
Central Governement as part of ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ selected 10 iconic places across the country to initiate a massive cleanliness drive. Meenakshi temple was one among them and several action plans relating to cleanliness were implemented on its premises, both inside and outside.
Collector Veera Raghava Rao and Corporation Commissioner S Aneesh Sekhar received the award in New Delhi from the Ministry for Drinking Water and Sanitation on October 2.

The city corporation along with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) will be spending close to Rs 11.65 crore towards promoting cleanliness in the temple. The temple administration undertook initiatives like building modern toilets, separating degradable waste from the non-biodegradable substances, creating a plastic-free zone, making available purified water and appointing 24/7 cleaning workers and inspectors.
Collector K Veera Raghava Rao, who was present at the temple during a cleanliness campaign held on Sunday, said, “We are happy that Madurai Meenakshi temple has been selected for the Swachh Iconic Place Award. We should continue working towards making the city a clean and green place.”
Sampath, an Assistant officer at the temple said, “The award is a collective success. It is the result of the efforts of the temple administration, city corporation and the people visiting the temple. We thank them for this achievement.”
On Sunday at the event the collector distributed dhotis and sarees free of cost to patients at the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH). The dhotis and sarees that were distributed at the hospital were offered by the devotees at Meenakshi Temple and the temple authorities decided to distribute these sarees and dhotis to the patients admitted at GRH.
