Seva: The Nishkam Seva of Sikh Religion

Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism says:

ਸਚਹੁ ਓਰੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਉਪਰਿ ਸਚੁ ਆਚਾਰੁ ॥ (62)

सचहु ओरै सभु को उपरि सचु आचारु ॥ (62)

Sachahu Ourai Sabh Ko Oupar Sach Aachaar (62)

(Truth is above everything but higher still is truthful living.)

Thus, the truthful living involves performing Sewa (selfless service) for the welfare of humanity is the first step on the path of achieving the final goal of eternal peace.

With the above ideals in mind, the concept of forming Nishkam Sikh Welfare Council was conceived by a few like-minded persons. It was formed as a Non-Political body with the sole objective of serving the humanity, especially the helpless widows, orphans, destitute etc. irrespective of caste, creed and religion.

Though the idea of forming Nishkam Sikh Welfare Council was conceived much earlier but the happenings of November 1984 in the country accelerated its setting-up taking the responsibility of the relief and rehabilitation of the survivors. The emphasis was not only on distribution of ration or giving cash doles but making the people self-supporting by providing vocational, medical and educational assistance.

Immediately after setting-up with aid from ‘Indian Express Relief Fund’, ‘Ajit Relief Fund’ and philanthropic individuals, Organisations and Trusts, Nishkam provided vocational assistance to about 300 families of Sultanpuri, Mangolpuri, Tilak Vihar and other areas of Delhi. In addition, doors and windows were got fitted in the houses and Jhuggies (slums) in Mangolpuri, which had been badly damaged and in some cases even burnt down in Sultanpuri and Mangolpuri were got repaired or even reconstructed to make them livable for their occupants. Thereafter, besides providing relief materials, ceiling fans were provided in about 700 houses of widows of Tilak Vihar, Sangam Park, Raghubir Nagar, Garhi and Jahangirpuri etc. in Delhi. Various other rehabilitation projects were also taken up.

Nishkam also played a very positive and effective role

• in getting jobs in Banks/Govt. offices/Govt. Schools etc. for the widows of November, 1984 happenings

• in persuading Delhi Govt. not to recover the cost of houses allotted to widows of November, 1984 happenings.

Though initially, due to availability of limited resources and difficult circumstances, the assistance was mainly provided to the affected families of November, 1984 happenings, especially the orphans and widows, but with the passage of time and slow and steady build up of resources, the assistance is being provided without any distinctions as per teachings of Sri Guru Granth Sahib. The only visible change in the policy over a period of time is that the services, which were earlier directed towards the urban population, are now being oriented towards the rural folks, where the need is more.

MATA GUJRI SUKH NIWAS -http://www.nishkam.in/projects/orphanage–old-age-home

(FOR OLD AGED PERSONS AND NEEDY CHILDREN)

Mata Gujri Sukh Niwas at village Khanpur, Kharar (Punjab) is a project set up by `Nishkam’ over a period of six years (1993-99), with aid from Sadh Sangat of India, Kuwait, Europe, U.S.A. & Canada. The project is located at Gill Farm, Village Khanpur at Chandigarh Ludhiana Highway (NH95) at distance of 3 kilometers from Kharar. The land for the project was donated in 1993 by Sardar Jugraj Singh Gill (Ex- MLA, & Ex-Chairman of Punjab Mandi Board) & Late Sardarni Gurdev Kaur Gill (Ex-MLA) in loving memory of their sons Pilot officer Kanwarjit Singh Gill & S. Gurjit Singh Gill.

The need for such a project in Punjab was felt in wake of troublesome happenings in the State during 1980-1990 leading to unprecedented loss of precious young lives which resulted in lot of insecurity among elderly who suffered loss of their young sons and children who suffered loss of their fathers/parents. Presence of old aged persons and children together in Mata Gujri Sukh Niwas ensures a homely atmosphere for both and both cater to each other’s needs.

Mata Gujri Sukh Niwas consists of 36 residential rooms with attached bathrooms, dining hall & administrative-cum-medical block and can accommodate about 100 residents. Complete infrastructure is available which includes T.V & Leisure room, Gym facilities, Library, Garden and a Gurudwara Sahib and primary health centre, catering to the health needs of people in the nearby villages as well.

In Mata Gujri Sukh Niwas, old aged persons above 60 years of age and children aged between 5 to 12 years are admitted. Preferably children of widows/single parents/ orphans/handicapped parents are admitted and in rare cases, children of very poor parents, who are not in a position to afford education of their children are admitted.

Though the children are provided all facilities free of charge, the old aged persons have to pay according to their capacity, subject to a maximum of Rs. 1800/- per month.

The affairs of the Mata Gujri Sukh Niwas are managed by a Local Project Committee headed by S. Jugraj Singh Gill. Mata Gujri Sukh Niwas has full time Manager, Assistant Manager, cook, guard, gardener & Helpers.
