Blind Walk: From Darkness to Light : Initiative by Dialogue Highway & The Project Vision

Blind Walk: From Darkness to Light : Initiative by Dialogue Highway & The Project Vision

Write Up: Devinder Sharma

Imagine walking blindfolded, shoulder to shoulder, on the busy road from Sector-17 plaza towards the Punjab/Haryana Secretariat in Chandigarh. Scary, isn’t it? Well, this is what we in Dialogue Highway trust plan to do on the World Sight Day, Oct 12. Punjab Minister Navjot Sidhu will flag off the blind walk. Blind Walk will take place today at 262 places in the country, and also 4 other countries.

We plan to invite an unending stream of people, all blindfolded, and guided by visually-impaired students, to walk for just 1 km stretch. And and I am sure it will help them to understand what a blind person goes through day in and day out. This is our humble effort to sensitize people on the need to bring light into the lives of the blind people. Believe me, when you walk blind-folded with us, it is going to be for sure an “eye-opening experience” for you. Try it for once, if you don’t believe me.

We need to know that India needs 1,24,000 corneas every year for eye transplantation but gets only about 24,000 donated. However, to make the Blind Walk a highly successful event (I am expecting 700+ participants), we need your help. It can be in any form — volunteering, printing T-shirts and caps, blind folds, sponsoring equipment for blind, refreshments etc etc. All this would require resources. If you think we need to stand with the blind, do let us know how you can be of help. Whether you are in the Chandigarh tri-city or elsewhere you can certainly contribute in your own way for this noble cause. Such Blind Walks are being organised at more than 100 places. More than just liking this post, I expect you to share it, and tell me what you can do. Whatever contribution you can make, whether it is Rs 100, Rs 500, and above is certainly welcome.

Chandigarh Blind Walk scheduled for Oct 12 aims at 500 eye donations. For the blind, the best way to bring light into their lives is to donate your eyes. The proposed Blind Walk will hopefully help sensitize the people to the dark world of the blind. Dialogue Highway is very hopeful that people will come forward to be with the blind, and as I said earlier the best way is to register your name among the eye donors. This is only possible if you spread the word, ensure that people come and join the Blind Walk, and be a part of this eye donation movement. Remember there are roughly 15 million blind in India, and we all have a responsibility towards them. If you are in Chandigarh or around, please come. Take a Blind Walk with us.
