Bharat Sevashram Sangha: Selfless motives to the service of Humanity

The Bharat Sevashram Sangha , a charitable organization is a spiritual brotherhood of monks and selfless workers devote to the service of humanity. Since the foundation in 1917 by Respected Acharya Srimat Swami Pranavanandji Maharaj, the organization is been tirelessly working for the upliftment of the downtrodden and neglected sections of the society. Their efforts in reaching the people at the time of distress is admirable.

The Khatra ashram was founded in South Bankura in the year 1986, by Swami Nirmohananda-ji Maharaj, to spread the multifaceted social activities of the Sangha in the villages, especially those in backward rural areas and for the benefit of the weaker sections of the society. The ashram is surrounded by hills and mountains, and the pleasant atmosphere enhance the beauty of the ashram . The ashram is 8 kms from the beautiful tourist place Mukut Manipur. Nearby, at the confluence of the Kansabati and kumari rivers, a huge water reservoir and dam is present.  It has become a beautiful Picnic place for the people from West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar.

There are many activities which are organized under this organization:

Text Book Bank And Library:

The organization visited the village and learnt that poverty is the main reason for driving children to work as labourers in farms, agriculture, local brick factories or stone quarries. Some have started working at a very tender age, some after primary school and some after secondary. These children were forced to leave their education to earn the livelihood of the family. The Sangha, to address some of the hardships faced by such families has started a text book bank. From 2000, the ashram has been helping such needy families with books, stationaries, note books etc to help the children continue their education. Distribution of clothes and other daily necessities are also provided by the Sangha. Free medical camp are also been organized for the clildren. This text book bank has reached upto 4200 members. This text book bank relies completely on donations received from Philanthropic individuals.

The lack of awareness about the importance of education, is the main reason that the parents are not concerned about their children being educated.  A school with many facilities have been started in the ashram, which has risen the interest amongst the parents. Currently the school strength is 230 students, and more is expected in future. Stationaries, tiffins and uniform are given free of cost, which attracts the interest of parents. A Library with variety of books have been recently started.

Computer Education center:

Computer is the need of today, but it is impossible for the rural people to bear the expenses. The Sangha takes initiative and started a small computer education centre. The institution has 30 computers and more than 25 students are getting the lessons for it.

Yoga Training Centre:

Human body may undergo many health issues, and as a precautionary Yoga centre has been started for the school children, which helps them to stay healthy.
