As Kanwar Yatra 2026 approaches, millions of devotees are preparing for one of India’s largest spiritual pilgrimages. Every year during the holy month of Shravan (Sawan), Kanwariyas collect sacred Ganga water and offer it to Lord Shiva.
But did you know that there are different types of Kanwar Yatra?
1. Dak Kanwar
Dak Kanwar is the most demanding form of the pilgrimage. Devotees travel continuously with minimal or no breaks to offer the holy water to Lord Shiva as quickly as possible. It symbolizes unwavering faith, discipline and endurance.
2. Khadi Kanwar
In Khadi Kanwar, the Kanwar is never placed directly on the ground. During breaks, devotees use special stands to keep it upright, reflecting respect for the sacred Ganga water.
3. Baithaki Kanwar
Baithaki Kanwar allows devotees to take planned breaks while continuing the pilgrimage according to traditional customs. It is one of the most widely followed forms of the yatra.
4. Sadharan Kanwar
In this traditional form, devotees complete the journey at their own pace while observing the customs and rituals associated with the pilgrimage.
