What is Islam? (Five Pillars of Islam)
Islam is the world’s second-largest religion, followed by people across the globe. The word “Islam” comes from the Arabic language, meaning submission and peace. The foundation of this faith lies in Monotheism, that is, belief in only one God (Allah) and worshipping Him alone. Islam teaches that a human being’s life should be devoted to morality, brotherhood, and service to humanity.
The Five Pillars of Islam
The entire philosophy of life in Islam rests upon five fundamental pillars. Every Muslim is required to follow these principles.
1. Shahada – Declaration of Faith
Shahada is the first and most important pillar of Islam. It is the declaration that:
“La ilaha illallah, Muhammadur Rasoolullah”
Meaning: There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad (peace be upon him) is His final Messenger.
This statement is the foundation of Islam and the greatest belief in a Muslim’s life.
2. Salah – Prayer
Salah (prayer) is the second pillar of Islam. Every Muslim is required to pray five times a day facing Makkah. Salah is not only worship but also a discipline, spiritual peace, and a direct connection with Allah. It removes arrogance, builds humility, and teaches time management and spiritual purity.
3. Zakat – Charity
Islam places great emphasis on social justice and charity. Zakat, the third pillar, requires Muslims to give a fixed portion of their wealth to the poor, orphans, and needy people. The purpose is to maintain economic balance in society and to support those in need.
4. Sawm – Fasting
Sawm, or fasting, is the fourth pillar of Islam. During the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, abstaining from food and drink. The purpose of fasting is not merely to stay hungry and thirsty but to learn self-control, patience, compassion, and spiritual purity. It helps one to understand the pain of the poor and develop responsibility towards society.
5. Hajj – Pilgrimage
Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam. It is the sacred pilgrimage performed in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. Every Muslim who is physically and financially able is required to perform Hajj at least once in their lifetime. Hajj holds immense importance as millions of Muslims gather together, symbolizing unity, equality, and brotherhood.
The core message of Islam is faith in one God (Allah), a moral life, brotherhood, and service to humanity. The five pillars are not just religious practices but guiding principles that bring balance and discipline to human life.
Shahada is the foundation of faith.
Salah provides spiritual peace.
Zakat establishes social equality.
Sawm teaches self-restraint.
Hajj symbolizes universal brotherhood.
Thus, Islam is not just a religion but a complete way of life, showing the path of peace, love, and humanity.
