Significance of Shravan Month

Shravana Month, fifth in the traditional calendar, is the most significant month, as it is believed to be the most auspicious. It usually comes in the month of August, everyday of this month is considered very auspicious especially to Telugu.

Shravanam is a special month for the newly married woman, as she after a month away in Ashada Masam from the in-laws house shall return to start the Shravanam rituals and Vrat of Goddess Lakshmi and Gowri.

It is said that Shravanam is the month of  prayers, as the name signifies Shravanam means Listening, it is believed that if prayed during this month Lord listens. It is also a good month to start the new vrat’s. in olden days Shravanam mas is meant to be auspicious month to start learning so upakarma takes place in this month to start studying Vedas.

In Shravanam, Mondays,Tuesdays,Fridays,Saturdays are precious, on Mondays Shravana Somavara vratam is observed.

Shravana Somavara Vratam – Lord shiva is prayed on this day, It is said that praying Shiva on this day makes them pious and that they will be blessed. Many do full fasting while few eat once a day. All the Shiva Temples perform special Rudraabhishekam and poojas on Mondays.

At the Dakshinamnaya Sringeri Sharada mutt, Sri Jagadguru Bharati Teertha does a special Chandramouliswara pooja in the afternoon.

The Mondays in Shravanam are : July 24, July 31st, August 7th, August 14th, August 21st

Mangala Gauri Vratam – The newly married bride as she returns to the in-laws shall start her Mangala Gauri Vratam, which she will be doing for the 5-7 years. This Vratam is for godess Gauri for the prosperiety anf blessings for her husband and newly married life. Temples across Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana are organizing Mangala Gauri vratams for ladies on Tuesdays. Kanakadurga temple in Vijayawada, Bhramarambika Temple in Srisailam, Sri Padmavathi Temple in Tirupathi, Saraswathi temple in Wargal, Alampur, Shakthi Peetham are few of the Temples which have already announced the tickets for the public.

The Tuesdays in Shravanam are : July 25th, August 1st, August 8th, August 15th

Varalakshmi Vratam – Varalakshmi Vratam is supposedly the most popular and favourite of the woman folk, as they get to buy new jewelry and sarees. This Vratam is done on Friday’s in the month of Shravanam. The Friday before the Paurnami (full moon day) is said to be the birthday of goddess lakshmi.  Hence it is considered more special and many do Varalakshmi Vratham on this day and it is falling on August 4th this year.

The Fridays in Shravanam are – July 28th, August 4th, August 11th, August  18th.

Saturdays in Shravanam are considred to be the day devoted to Lord Venkateswara, and many do Sanivara Vratam’s this day. And devotees prefer to do Satyanarayana Vratam on this day. Hence all the Vaishnavites temples organize special poojas and abhishekams on Saturdays.

Temple managements of Yadadri, Simhachalam, Annavaram, Pitapuram, Bheemavaram, Tirupati, Srisailam, Pitapuram and Draksharamam are making elaborate arrangements for the Satyanarayana Swamy Vratams in this month.

Saturdays in the month of Shravanam are: July 29th, August 5th, August 12th, August 19th.

Festivals in Shravana Masam

Gauruda Panchami – Lord Garuda, the Vahanam of Lord Vishnu, the Child who worked hard to release his mother from slavery, on whose name Garuda Puranam exists, he is prayed on this day for strength and courage.

Shravana Sudha Saptami –  Saptami is considered food for oraying Lord Surya for the good health.

Shravana Sudha Ekadashi (Putradhi Ekadashi) – this Ekadasi is well known for Ekadashi vratam to be performed by the childless for the boon. It is considered precious to donate an umbrella on this day

Shravana Sudha dwadashi(Damodara Dwadashi) – This day is dedicated  for praying Lord Sri Hari and is considered to be the auspiciousto give danam / donations to the needy and brahmin.

Jandhyala pournami: is a  festival for the upanayanam done men whocahnge their Yagnopaveetham, sacred thread and do Gayatri Japam. It is also believed that  Hayagriva (Knowledge god) and Santoshi Matha had taken their forms on this auspicious day. And it is also believed that Sage Agastya was preached Lalitha Shasranamam  by Hayagriva.

Sankata Hara Chathurdhi –  It is said that doing Sankata Hara Chatrudhi in this month is equivalent performing it in the whole year every month and even when not done all along the year are being blessed by Lord Ganesha.

Shravana Shukla Ashtami /Krishnashtami –  This day is celebrated as the birthday of  Lord Krishan. By donating Butter donating on this day it is that precious wishes are fulfilled.

Shravana Bahula Amavasya/ Polala Amavasya –  This day many do the amavasya vratam for good of the family and the fertility and for the prosperiety of the family. And also all Farm Animals will be prayed on this day.

Each day is considered auspicious in this month.
