Muharram 2025: Do We Truly Understand the Legacy of Sacrifice and Justice?
Date & Start of the Islamic New Year
Muharram, the first month of the Islamic Hijri calendar, is expected to begin on 6th July 2025 (Sunday). This marks the start of the new Islamic year 1447 AH.
Since the Islamic calendar follows the lunar cycle, the exact date of 1st Muharram may vary depending on moon sighting in different countries. In places like Saudi Arabia, India, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, the UK, and the USA, the date may fall on 6th or 7th July 2025.
Why is Muharram Considered So Sacred?
Muharram is one of the four sacred months in Islam, known as “haram months,” during which fighting or conflict is prohibited. But more importantly, the 10th day of Muharram — known as ‘Ashura’ — holds deep historical and emotional significance.
It was on this day in 680 CE that Imam Hussain, the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), was martyred in the Battle of Karbala along with 72 of his family members and followers. Their sacrifice wasn’t for power — it was for truth, justice, and to stand against tyranny.
Imam Hussain’s sacrifice is not just a part of Islamic history — it’s a universal message of moral courage and standing up for what is right.
Karbala: Not Just Mourning, But a Message
Many people see Muharram only as a time of mourning, but it goes far beyond that. It reminds us that standing against injustice may cost everything — family, comfort, even life. Yet, choosing the path of truth and righteousness is what gives life real meaning.
Muharram is not just about grief. It’s about resistance, clarity, and moral strength.
Different Traditions: Unity in Diversity
For Shia Muslims, Muharram is a deeply spiritual and emotional time. They participate in majlis (religious gatherings), wear black as a symbol of mourning, and take part in tazia processions, which represent the memory of Karbala.
Sunni Muslims, on the other hand, observe fasts on the 9th and 10th of Muharram, in remembrance of Prophet Musa (Moses), whose people were saved from Pharaoh on this day. Both traditions honour the importance of sacrifice, each in their own meaningful way.
Muharram Around the World
Iraq (Karbala): Millions gather to commemorate Imam Hussain at his shrine.
Iran: Streets echo with prayer gatherings and chants.
Lebanon, Bahrain, Syria: Large public processions and blood donation drives are held.
India: Cities like Lucknow, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Kolkata witness peaceful processions, poetry (marsiya), and community prayers.
UK, USA, Canada: Muslim communities hold interfaith events, peace rallies, and awareness sessions about the story of Karbala.
From Karbala to California — Muharram continues to inspire people across faiths and nations.

Have We Understood Imam Hussain’s Message?
As Muharram comes and goes each year, are we merely performing rituals, or truly reflecting on what it means to stand up for justice?
Are we willing to speak out against oppression — even if it costs us something?
Do we uphold humanity, honesty, and faith — in our actions, not just in our words?
Muharram is not just about sadness. It is a powerful reminder that truth is worth fighting for, no matter the cost.
