Samvatsari Parva 2025: Why is it called the Day of Forgiveness?

Samvatsari Parva is the final and most sacred day of the Paryushan Mahaparva in Jainism. It is also known as the “Day of Forgiveness” or the “Festival of Apology.” This day symbolizes self-reflection, forgiveness, and spiritual purification, when Jain followers wholeheartedly say “Micchhami Dukkadam”—seeking forgiveness from others and also forgiving those who may have hurt them.

When is Samvatsari in 2025?

In 2025, Samvatsari will be observed on Thursday, 28 August 2025. This day corresponds to the Shukla Panchami of the Bhadrapada month. It marks the conclusion of the eight-day-long Paryushan festival, during which Jain devotees engage in fasting, penance, and deep spiritual practices. Samvatsari becomes the divine day of universal forgiveness and soul purification.

Why is this day special?

Samvatsari is not merely a religious celebration—it spreads the eternal message of ahimsa (non-violence), self-introspection, and supreme forgiveness. Whether knowingly or unknowingly, if we have hurt anyone, this is the day when we seek forgiveness through our thoughts, words, and actions. At the same time, we extend forgiveness to others, opening the path toward inner peace and true humanity.

What happens on Samvatsari?

On this day, Jain monks, nuns, and devotees observe the practice of Pratikraman—a deep introspection where they review their actions of the past year, repent for mistakes, and take vows of improvement for the future. In the evening, people greet each other with “Micchhami Dukkadam” (meaning: “May my misdeeds be forgiven”). Many also send messages, letters, or make calls to express forgiveness, strengthening bonds of love and peace.

Spiritual Significance

Samvatsari is regarded as the most important and heartfelt day of Jainism. It teaches us that forgiveness is the very foundation of dharma (religion). By letting go of grudges and ego, this day inspires us to embrace humility, dissolve boundaries of anger, and establish lasting ahimsa in our lives.
