The martyrdom day of fourth caliph Hazrat Ali (RA) will be observed on Wednesday (today) with traditional religious solemnity and spirit amid tight security. Faithful will hold Majalis, conferences and take out Tazia processions in various cities in the subcontinent to highlight his personality and achievements. Both Sunni and Shia observe the martyrdom day with special prayers held in different mosques.

Mourning processions, religious gatherings, distribution of fruits and bread to patients and charity marked the 1399th martyrdom day of Hazrat Imam Ali, son-in-law of Prophet Muhammad, on Tuesday, in Hyderabad. Thousands, including women and children, participated in different mourning processions in Hyderabad and parts of Telangana. The main procession began in Charminar and concluded at Masjid-e-Imamiya in Chadarghat.

The martyrdom day of Hazrat Imam Ali falls on the 21st day of Ramzan, the ninth month of Islamic calendar. This year it coincided with June 5. The mourning procession with participants wearing black clothes, beating chests and inflicting self-injury began from Charminar after the installation of Alam Mubarak. Majlis, Aza and Matam will be held on Wednesday too. The procession passed through Charminar, Pathergatti, Medina cross road, Chattabazar, Purani Haveli, Darul Shifa and Azakhana Zehra.

In fact Telangana Governement has declared the martyrdom of Hazrat Ali, the 4th Caliph of Islam, as optional holiday on Wednesday, 6th June.

Hazrat Imam Ali

Hazrat Imam Ali was martyred at the Grand Mosque in Kufa city in modern-day Iraq. He was the Caliph when he was attacked with a poison-laced sword. According to Gregorian calendar, the incident took place on January 26, 661 CE, corresponding to 21st of Ramzan, 40 AH (Hijri calendar).

Hazrat Ali is the first man to embrace Islam, he is the first Imam of the Shia through whom the progeny of Imamat is traced, was born in Mecca around 599 CE. It is said that he was born in the Ka’ba, a sign of distinction, according to some sources. As the cousin, son-in-law, and foremost Companion of the Prophet, he is revered by most Muslims. In the Sunni interpretation of Islam, Hazrat Ali is regarded as one of the four righteous caliphs, reigning from 656 to 661.

Throughout the Prophet’s life, Hazrat Ali proved his unwavering loyalty to him and the cause of Islam. He was a distinguished scribe of the continuous revelations from God. Hazrat Ali’s standing in Muslim tradition is evidenced by the numerous narratives that relate to the period of his Caliphate and earlier, and also by a monumental compilation of his discourses, sermons and epistles titled Nahj al-balagha (The Way of Eloquence). Compiled by al-Sharif al-Radi (d.1016), a renowned Shia scholar of Abbasid Baghdad, the Nahj al-balagha, has exerted significant influence on Arabic literature.

Hazrat Imam Ali’s wise counsels, which inspired the spiritual life of Muslims through the centuries, were translated into numerous languages across the Muslim world. The Kalame Mawla is a poetic rendition of his teachings in Hindustani. Due to his knowledge and example, Hazrat Ali is regarded as the source and inspiration for many of the central Islamic sciences, such as the study of Arabic grammar, Quranic exegesis, and jurisprudence, and is constantly referred to by later writers of works on ethics and philosophy.

The intellectual and spiritual legacy of Hazrat Ali is widespread and can be found amongst Muslims of all interpretative communities.
