Singapore Praised for COVID-19 Containment

World Health Organisation (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has praised Singapore’s “all-government approach” in the containment of Covid-19.

He said the threat of a pandemic has become very real. He urged countries around the world to “not give up” in the fight against the coronavirus.

There are many examples of countries demonstrating that an all-of-society, all-of-government approach works, he said.

WHO Head said, “China, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, USA and many others have activated emergency measures”.

He further said, “Singapore is a good example of an all-of-government approach. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s regular videos are helping to explain the risks and reassure people.”

Lesson to be learnt from Singapore:

A lesson to be learnt from Singapore in tackling COVID-19. Singapore has something to teach the world about the importance of well-functioning, high-capacity, and trusted government in times of crisis.

The coronavirus could have easily overwhelmed the wealthy state. Even after recieving the infected travellers directly from Wuhan, it  effectively tracked and isolated cases.

It limited to the early total of just 226, with zero deaths.

In effect, Singapore quickly initiated measures that other countries, including the U.S. couldn’t. Ministry of Health website demonstrates, the country tested Wuhan arrivals.

They instituted travel bans, tracked the infected, and, finally, located all their contacts.Further Singapore cancelled all sporting events and other public gatherings.

The public-health response was based on learning from less successful experiences with the SARS and H1N1 in 2002 and 2009.
