Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) is the heart and soul of Iyengar Yoga and is located in Pune, Maharashtra. The institute was established on January 19, 1975, and is dedicated to Smt. Ramamani Iyengar, the wife of Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar.

Directors of this institute are Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar, Geeta S.Iyengar and Prashant S. Iyengar. The students from all over the world come here to receive the essence of yoga and learn the values of life.

Unique Design of RIMYI

There is a great significance behind the unique design of RIMYI. The three floors represent the body, mind, and soul. Its height is 71 feet and has 8 columns which represent the eight limbs of ashtanga yoga i.e.yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana and samadhi.

The bust of Smt. Ramamani at the gate welcomes the visitor while that of Guruji is present in the entrance hall. Guruji’s bust has been chiselled by the Queen Mother of Belgium at the age of 81 joyous at accomplishing her life’s dream of performing Sirsasana.

Three floors of RIMYI represent the body, mind, and soul and 8 columns represent the eight limbs of Ashtanga yoga.

About the RIMYI Library

The institute is filled with numerous awards, citations, presentations, offerings, and works of art presented to Guruji. The library has 8000 titles in several languages on a variety of subjects ranging from philosophy, human anatomy, and physiology, Ayurveda, commentaries on the scriptures, modern medicine and of course yoga.

What Is Iyengar Yoga

Sage Patanjali, who has penned this subject in his treatise Yoga Darshana defines yoga as Chitta vritti nirodha. Chitta is the consciousness which includes the mind, the intellect, and the ego. Yoga is a method of silencing the vibrations of the Chitta.

The eight aspects (ashtanga) of yoga are-

Yama and Niyama

Asanas

Pranayama

Pratyahara

Dharana

Dhyana

Samadhi

Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar with his intellectual and spiritual practices has masterminded the techniques which can be used by all practitioners of yoga. “Research-based experience” and “experience based research” has helped him in evolving this technique which is now known as”Iyengar Yoga”. He has therefore made it possible for ordinary human beings to experience the wisdom of the yoga sutras.
